Growing up, Bernard Favors loved watching cooking shows featuring celebrity chefs like Julia Child and helping his mom out in the kitchen.

But don't tell that to his former football and basketball teammates.

"Watching those shows weren't popular [for boys] back then," said Favors, a high school wrestling coach and owner of a courier service.

Today, Favors, 47, knows his way around a kitchen.

On Sunday, Favors, of Stone Mountain, will be among the 100 or so metro men participating in the 12th annual Real Men Cook for Charity event at the Boisfeuillet Jones Atlanta Civic Center. Participants will also include restaurants and caterers. Proceeds help two metro Atlanta nonprofits: STAND, which offers treatment of substance abuse and helps men who are coming out of prison; and The Lead Foundation, a youth leadership development and college prep program.

Similar celebrations will be held across the nation. The event was started in 1989 by  Kofi Moyo and Yvette Moyo-Gillard to recognize men on Father's Day.

Favors usually makes it a family affair involving his sons and two daughters. This year, he will make a dish that he describes as "Italian soul. Every year I try to create something a little bit different."
