Atlantans celebrate Star Wars Day
Not that long ago, in a galaxy not far away, a group of dedicated and loyal “Star Wars” fans got together and decided that a special day was needed to call attention to and celebrate the cult status and popularity of the films.
The holiday has invaded mainstream America, just like Imperial Stormtroopers taking over a Rebel base on the ice planet Hoth. It’s quite possible you’ll hear a “May the Fourth be with you” greeting, a variation of “May the Force be with you,” the famous phrase from the films.
With a new “Star Wars” movie now in production, “May the Fourth” celebrations are planned around the metro area. Here is a sampling:
Bash of the Empire III: Star Wars Dance Party
Looking to dance the night away with other “Star Wars” fanatics? The Masquerade is holding this annual bash, complete with DJs, go-go dancers and a midnight costume contest.
$15. 9 p.m. May 3. 695 North Ave., Atlanta. 21 and up only. www.bashoftheempire.com.
Bar Wars: Star Wars Day Pub Crawl
Atlanta’s biggest intergalactic celebration paying homage to George Lucas’ series is a Sunday pub crawl through five Virginia-Highland bars. Come dressed as Yoda, Chewbacca or throw on a vintage Death Star T-shirt for the occasion. You get a shot at each bar, admission to the after-party/costume contest and food discounts.
$20. May 4. Registration starts at 4 p.m. Diesel Filling Station, 870 N. Highland Ave., Atlanta. 21 and up only. www.barwarscrawl.com.
Gwinnett Braves’ Star Wars Day
The Gwinnett Braves hold their first Star Wars Day Sunday as part of their game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, featuring lightsaber battles, “Star Wars” music between innings and photo opportunities with the Georgia 501st Legion (a group of volunteers who appear in “Star Wars” costumes). “We thought it was a nice mix of the family atmosphere we promote, and a way to reach fans though the 501st Legion,” Gwinnett Braves spokesman Brandon Apter said, noting that 10 percent of ticket sales will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
$7.50-$20. 2:05 p.m. May 4. Gates open at 1:05. Coolray Field, 2500 Buford Drive, Lawrenceville. www.gwinnettbraves.com.
Revenge of the 5th at Battle & Brew Pub
Battle & Brew usually pulls out all the stops for Star Wars Day, but since the pub is closed Sundays, the fun moves this year to the 5th of May. As in “Revenge of the 5th.” Drink “Star Wars”-themed cocktails and qualify for a chance to catch a screening of “Star Wars: Uncut,” a new film shot by fans that re-creates famous scenes from the movies.
8 p.m. May 5. Battle & Brew, 279 Powers Ferry Road, Marietta. www.battleandbrew.com.
Disney Stores
With the “Star Wars” franchise now a Disney property, Atlanta-area Disney Stores will offer patrons the chance to win prizes. The first 100 guests to visit a Disney Store Sunday will receive a “Star Wars” pin. Youngsters are invited to learn the ways of the Force at 12:30 p.m.
Free. May 4. Disney Stores at Town Center at Cobb, Mall of Georgia, North Point Mall and Perimeter Mall. Children must be 3 to participate. www.disneystore.com.
