For the first time in more than two decades, comedian Adam Sandler returned to "Saturday Night Live" to host this week's episode – and kicked off his appearance by letting everyone know why he left in the first place.
"I was fired. I was fired," the "Wedding Singer" star crooned during his opening monologue. "I was fired, so sad to tell. Well, I never saw it coming. I got fired from 'SNL.'"
The former cast member, who appeared on the show from 1990 to 1995, drew cheers as he referenced his old characters, Crazy Spoon Head and Canteen Boy, and former colleague Chris Farley, who died in 1997.
"I was fired, not rehired. Well, it made me sad and blue," Sandler sang. "I told my boy Chris Farley I got fired, and he said, 'Sandman, they fired my [expletive], too!'"

Fellow "SNL" alum and comedian Chris Rock then joined Sandler onstage to lament his own firing from the show in 1993.
"I got fired," Rock sang. "I was fired. I was fired by NBC, then I went on 'In Living Color'; three weeks later they took it off TV."
Moments later, current "Saturday Night Live" star Pete Davidson tried to sing his own verse.
"I was fired," he belted before Sandler interjected, "No, no, Pete, you weren't. You weren't fired."
"I wasn't? How's that even possible?" Davidson asked.
"I don't know, but be patient because it's coming soon," Sandler quipped before resuming the song.
"I was fired. I was fired," Sandler sang. "NBC said that I was done, then I made over $4 billion at the box office, so I guess you could say I won."
