Cheapest new cars for 2014

Car and Driver magazine has come up with the list of the top 10 cheapest new cars of 2014, starting with the costliest among the bunch, the Mazda 2 Sport.

Car and Driver said that in the cases where more than one body style of a given model would make the list, only the least expensive among them was included in the interest of diversity.

Steep new car prices are partly why used cars continue to be in demand, but new car sales are also up, about 4.3 percent so far this year.

According Kelley Blue Book, the average price of a new car in the U.S. is now about $32,000.

The average new car price is up from $12,750 in 1993, according to an analysis TrueCar.com did for USA Today.

TrueCar.com, one of many platforms for buying vehicles, says August is the month for the best deals because most dealerships receive new vehicles in September and want to clear out existing stock in August before the new arrivals.

TrueCar says new car and truck prices during the past five years in August have averaged $29,296 -- $169 lower than any other month.

TrueCar says you get a better deal on a Sunday than on a Saturday, and on the first or second day of the month rather than the last two days of the month.

Despite the conventional wisdom that the cheapest prices are in December, TrueCar says prices in December averaged $31,146, or $1,850 higher than August.

Car and Driver said the best deal when it comes to the lowest price is the Nissan Versa 1.6 S sedan.
