Havertys returns to Buckhead

Furniture retailer Havertys has returned to Buckhead years after moving its store outside the Perimeter. The company, founded in downtown Atlanta in 1885, has opened a Havertys Style Studio at the corner of Peachtree and Piedmont roads, at the site the retailer occupied from 1970 to 1990. Havertys' first store opened on Hunter Street in Atlanta in 1885.

Havertys opened a larger, downtown Atlanta store at 22 Edgewood Ave., in 1929. The store closed in 1972.

Havertys opened its first Buckhead store on April 1. 1944.

A second Buckhead store opened in the 1950s, but later closed in 1969.

A Havertys in Lenox Square opened on July 28, 1950. It closed Jan. 15, 1990.

The Havertys store at Peachtree and Piedmont roads originally opened on Jan. 18, 1970. The company occupied the space for two decades until 1990. The Container Store occupied the space from 1991 to 2012. When the site became available again, Havertys reclaimed the space.

“With Buckhead exploding, we had to be there,” said Clarence Smith, chairman, president, and chief executive officer. “We love the idea of going back where we were. We’re back in the best shopping area in the South.”

Havertys Style Studio is a two-story, 23,000-square-foot showroom, a smaller-sized store compared to Havertys’ other stores. It’s the company’s first store inside the Perimeter since its Northlake store closed in 2008.
