National Beef Packing Co., a major meat processor, plans to expand its operations in southwest Georgia, creating 200 jobs.

The company plans to invest $9 million in the expansion in Moultrie in Colquitt County. The plant houses consumer-ready beef, pork and ground beef processing operations.

Two years ago, Kansas City, Mo.-based National Beef laid off workers at the plant after losing Wal-Mart as a major customer, according to published reports.

The expansion will double the work force at the plant.

“We are excited about the decision to invest in the expansion of our Moultrie facility,” said Kareem Kelly, general manager of the Moultrie facility. “The company’s investment of approximately $9 million is an exciting step in the continued growth of our consumer-ready business.”

The southwest Georgia plant, one of the largest private employers in Colquitt County, has been in operation since 2001.
