A former top executive at a major Midwest bank has joined the board of United Community Banks of Blairsville, United said Friday in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.

Peter Raskind, former chairman, president and CEO of Cleveland-based National City Bank, is now a director at United, the third-largest bank based in Georgia. Raskind, known as a turnaround agent, steered the loss-plagued National City into a 2008 merger with PNC Financial of Pittsburgh, during the depths of the financial crisis.

He is currently the interim chief executive of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District.

Raskind was appointed by Corsair Georgia, an affiliate of Corsair Capital, which along with other major investors, recently pumped $380 million into United. United reports first quarter earnings April 28.
