For the 11th consecutive year, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and AJCjobs is honoring and celebrating nurses throughout metro Atlanta and Georgia.

Again this year, from hundreds of nominations, an independent panel of judges has chosen 10 extraordinary nursing professionals to represent thousands of their colleagues at the annual Nursing Excellence Awards.

Held during National Nurses Week, May 6-12, this year’s luncheon was on May 10 at Cobb Galleria.

Yelitza Guzman from Gwinnett Medical Center was among the honorees who went above and beyond the call of duty to make a significant impact on their patients.

Guzman was nominated by Dr. Murtaza Cassoobhoy who in part, wrote: “Talking to some of the nurses that work with Yelitza, I consistently hear that she is someone they can always rely on to help with their patients if they get busy. On her days off she will call the floor to check on her patients. Spanish is her native language and she has just completed a medical translator course, so that she can officially translate between physicians and other staff on the floor to enhance patient and family understanding.
