Atlanta Bread Co.'s business model is based on selling, well, bread. But donating bread, cookies and muffins to religious and charitable organizations is also important to the company, a top executive told the AJC.

"We are approached by a charitable organizations all the time," said chief operating officer Basil Couvaras. "When we go into a new market, we'll seek them out."

The company's stores currently donate a combined $1.3-$1.6 million in food per year, Couvaras said. Correct processes for donating food is part of the company's training for new franchisees, he said.

"There's nothing wrong with the product; it still tastes good," said Couvaras. "In a bakery environment, you have to have more than you're going to sell. The last thing you want to do is to throw it away."
