NBC had renewed freshman series "Southland" last spring after promising ratings. The show, starring Benjamin McKenzie ("The O.C.") as a rookie cop in Los Angeles, was set to debut on NBC for a second season October 23.

But NBC nixed it instead. The network had already filmed six episodes. Atlanta-based TNT, already home to cop shows such as “The Closer” and “Dark Blue,” is considering picking them up.

TNT also owns Warner Brothers, which created the show.

The Washington Post's Lisa de Moraes says the show was too dark for a 9 p.m. show (the show had been on at 10 p.m. but Jay Leno now owns that space.)

ABC in the meantime has given a full season for four shows: “Cougar Land,” “The Middle,” “Flash Forward” and “Modern Family.” Notably omitted: “Hank.”
