NBC is hoping it has struck gold with
Jerry Seinfeld
a second time. He is the executive producer and occasional guest judge on a new show called “The Marriage Ref.”
The simple set up: celebrities mull over specific married couple's dilemmas and debate who is right. Comic Tom Papa makes the final "judgment." The disputes are mostly lighthearted, not marriage breakers. There may be some prizes related to the dilemma itself.
How did you like "The Marriage Ref"?
- Fun concept. Will watch it again!
- Lame concept. Will watch anything else!
NBC did not give us advance copies of episodes but gave us some arguments. For instance, one involves a husband who wants to park his motorcycle in the living room. Another spouse wants a dead family dog stuffed.
Greg and Dianah Hunter of Gainesville, GA will appear this Sunday in the debut episode airing after the Winter Olympic closing ceremonies in Vancouver, scheduled to start at 10:30 p.m. Sunday. (The show will then air regularly at 10 p.m. Thursdays.)
The problem: Greg wants to get a stripper pole installed in their bedroom to spice up their love life. Dianah’s take? No way!
The pair have been married for 10 years and have four boys, ages 17, 13, 11 and six. (Obviously, they knew each other long before they were betrothed.)
“We’ve been discussing this for several years,” Greg said. “I go out with the guys. When some friends get married, we go to the entertainment clubs in Atlanta. I could envision my wife on a pole. It’s a compliment! It’s exciting. It’s something a lot of men would love to see their wife do. I see nothing wrong with it. It’s positive for relationships!”
I could practically feel Dianah rolling her eyes although I was talking to them by phone. “Well, once I play in the bedroom, I want to be done with it.” She said she doesn’t need a constant reminder a stripper pole would bring.
Greg’s argument? He could take it down and put it up at will. “I’ve’ done research,” he said. They cost $150 and up.
“That doesn’t include medical bills,” Dianah cracked.
She said friends and family who know them won’t be surprised by the argument. “He even tells my 72-year-old mother,” Dianah said. “He has no shame.”
Won’t the kids be infinitely embarrassed that this is being aired before millions of people on primetime TV? “The two youngest don’t care. The oldest two? Different story,” Dianah admitted.
“They’re neutral,” Greg argued. He said he will explain to the younger kids that it’s an “exercise pole” for mommy. (Dianah scoffed. She isn’t much into exercise, she said.)
Dianah has no real desire to even try out a stripper pole. “I can visualize you on one,” Greg said.
“I know you can!” she responded.
Dianah and Greg won’t say what Papa decided but Dianah said they did get some good insight.
Sadly, Greg added, “it’s still unresolved.”
