Jimmy Baron for the first time talked about his divorce with his wife Lisa Gimbel Baron Tuesday morning on Dave FM.

They've been married since 2003 and have a three-year-old son Micah.

“Some people have very easy friendly divorces,” he told listeners at about 8:05 a.m. today. “Some have very contentious difficult divorces. I’m happy ours is much more along the lines of the former than the latter.”

“We have put every ounce of our collective effort into keeping his environment as trouble free and conflict free as possible,” he added. “I don’t have to tell you that can be challenging. That can be challenging even in a happy marriage.”

Baron, who was a successful morning host at 99X from 1993 to 2006, said they have a “good custody arrangement,” but added, “I’m not going to lie. There’s something to be said to be able to peek inside your kid’s bedroom and see him or her sleeping every single night and I can’t do that… But, you know, Lisa and I work hard together to turn a lemon into lemonade.”

In an email, Lisa wrote: “I knew that JB was going to talk about it but I just didn’t know when.Yes, under the circumstances all is well…as you know, divorce is rough whether you were the one who wanted one or not. I am so thankful for my little boy…and for being schooled in the awesomeness that is Bruce Springsteen!!!! Hope you are well and thank you for checking in!!!”

He told listeners the week he got his job at Dave FM a year ago, he and Lisa had separated. But he chose at the time to say nothing.

“It’s a very delicate period,” he noted, after separation and before the divorce is final. “Why put the added stress of the public knowing and talking about it?”

In a separate interview Tuesday afternoon, Baron said the timing was coincidental, not circumstantial (though having a regular paycheck after being unemployed for three-plus years certainly made it easier.) He said having a job has helped keep his mind occupied the past year.

He wouldn't say why they have decided to divorce but promised it wasn't anything salacious. "I didn't pull a Mel Gibson," he noted.

He said he has talked about Micah on the air but seldom mentions Lisa, something some regular listeners have noticed. So he figured now that the divorce is filed and public record, he felt it was smart to tell the listeners, especially since so many are in the same boat.

Baron said he almost broached the topic a couple of times in the past but it only felt right Tuesday.

Lisa, a former spokeswoman for Ralph Reed, is planning a tell-all memoir set to come out next year. More details here.
