Former 99Xer Chris "Crash" Clark is moving back to Atlanta next month, he told me via Facebook today.

He spent four years in Boston working with Rich Shertenlieb and Fred Toucher, two other 99X ex-pats, mostly on a rock station WBCN-FM.

The show clicked, the ratings were so good, they were moved from afternoons to mornings. But WBCN last year changed to sports talk.

Although Fred and Rich stayed, management let Crash go a few months later. He is now seeking a job in Atlanta.

Crash Clark

  • Should be back on the radio- how about it, Dave FM?
  • Heard enough. He's done.

“When they switched formats from BCN to sports, they brought in a Boston sports guy and I was kinda pushed out due to budgets,” he wrote. “I got a last show.” He said the bosses “handled it very well. No bad blood. Just business. Got great recommendations from higher ups, too.”

He flew in Thursday and spent the morning on his former colleague Jimmy Baron's morning show on Dave FM.

“Probably the most well-liked personality I’ve ever worked with – except by management,” Baron said to me yesterday.

Crash was an integral part of 99X’s Morning X from its heyday in the 1990s to its slippage in the 2000s. He played the amiable party guy while throwing in his daily sports and traffic reports. But he clashed with management, getting fired (and re-hired) at least twice.

In late 2005, he got in trouble for allowing a woman do a sexual act in a bathroom with another patron to win 311 tickets. 99X let him go.

“I thought Crash was dead,” one caller said on Dave FM this morning. “I’m getting misty. It’s like a family reunion.”

“He’s been killed off a lot of shows,” Jimmy said.

Carter, the traffic guy, expressed insecurities about his job on the air at about 8:30 a.m. with Crash's presence as a sign Jimmy might want to hire him and dump Carter.

“I am not a home wrecker, I assure you,” Crash told Carter.

“You’re reading way too much into this,” Jimmy said.

“I’m taking off,” Crash joked. “I think Vikki needs a little help.”

A few minutes later, Crash started doing the traffic report, causing much laughter.

In Thursday’s interview, he said he’s a big fan of JB. “He’s one of the good guys.”

I had an amusing clash with Crash a few years back soon after he came to Boston. We patched things up but man, it was fun. My friend Jim Voris wrote about it here on his site 99xwatch.

In other Dave FM news, Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff is doing a "takeover" of Mara Davis' lunch hour with his own favorite songs.
