A major ice storm hit Cherokee County yesterday evening and brought with it downed power lines and trees and hazardous driving conditions.
At the height of the storm approximately 10,000 people were without power. It appeared that the greatest impact of the storm was along an east/west line along Highway 20 and then east of Canton.
Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services worked throughout the night responding to emergency calls and assisting with clearing the roadways throughout Cherokee County. At approximately 9:30 last night, Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services requested additional firefighters to create two chain saw strike teams to assist in gaining access to incident locations.
Cherokee County firefighters also provided oxygen to home patients who were without power.
Fire Station #2, located off Groover Street in Ball Ground, received some damage when a tree fell behind the station.
