A South Cobb High School student struck by a car as he tried to cross Austell Road died early Wednesday, Cobb County police said.

The boy, whose name was not released, was 16 years old, Sgt. Dana Pierce said.

Shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, the teenager and a friend left the school and attempted to walk across the four-lane, divided road when the 16-year-old was hit by a Plymouth Neon, Pierce said. The boy was not in a crosswalk when he was struck, and no information was released on why he was leaving school.

The injured boy was taken first to WellStar Cobb Hospital and then WellStar Kennestone Hospital, where he remained in critical condition until early Wednesday, according to police.

No charges are expected against the Acworth man who was driving the Neon, Pierce said. Bruce M. Guercio, 60, remained at the scene after the boy was hit, police said.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact Cobb police at 770-499-3987.
