Former Atlanta educators convicted in the school test-cheating scandal are expected to be sentenced today starting at 10 a.m.
Fulton County Judge Jerry Baxter will hand down sentences to 11 convicted teachers and educators, who face up to 20 years in prison on one count alone, violating Georgia's Racketeer-Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO. The eight convicted on additional counts could get more time.
Ten of those convicted are being held in the Fulton County jail until sentencing today. The 11th former educator, first grade teacher Shani Robinson, is expecting a baby this month. Baxter allowed her to remain free on bond until her sentencing in August.
All total, 32 former educators were convicted, counting the 21 who pleaded guilty to lesser charges before the trial’s start last year. Two others, including former Atlanta schools Superintendent Beverly Hall, died before they could be tried.
One of the 12 defendants who went to trial – which ended April 1 -- retired Dobbs Elementary School teacher Dessa Curb, was acquitted.
