Blacksburg, Va. -- Not for nothing is Virginia Tech known as every ACC program's least favorite destination. Logistics are never easy, there being no great way to get here. As evidence, we offer Georgia Tech's latest trek.
The Yellow Jackets boarded their plane in Atlanta before noon Friday. They expected to land in Roanoke, which is 40 miles up the interstate. They landed instead in North Carolina. Two landing passes at the Roanoke airport proved unavailing due to fog.
So the plane flew to Greensboro, which is a 2 1/2-hour drive from here. (I know because I made that haul on a stormy and foggy Labor Day 2012, when the Jackets lost here in overtime.) Tech's plane sat on the runway at GSO for a bit under an hour -- this narrative comes courtesy of Randy Waters, intrepid Tech broadcaster -- and waited for the fog at ROA to lift. Which it did. The Jackets got where they were going, albeit behind schedule.
About the game: Nobody knows how good either Tech is. Georgia Tech trailed Georgia Southern with 30 seconds left; Virginia Tech beat Ohio State on the road but lost at home to East Carolina. Most everybody assumes the Hokies will win today, but I haven't been impressed with VPI, as we old folks used to call it, in a while. I'm not sure the Jackets, as unimpressive as they've been, can't win here.
And with that, the figurative floor is again open. I'll be here until somebody named Tech wins. And I thank you, as ever, in advance.
