ATHENS
"Change can be a good thing," Georgia defensive end Ray Drew said Wednesday, "or it can be a bad thing. We'll see this upcoming season."
The guess here is that change -- from defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, now of Louisville, to Jeremy Pruitt, lately of BCS champ Florida State -- is among the best things that could have happened to Georgia football. Grantham wasn't the world's worst DC, but his defenses hadn't been as good as their personnel the past two seasons. Now a ring-bearing new man gets to try.
As coach Mark Richt said, speaking at the Bulldogs' pre-spring practice media convocation: "The energy level is good in our building right now."
Said Drew: "There's a fresh slate. There's a different attitude. There's a little different mindset. Players have the chance to reinvent themselves, to become the player they want to be."
Said cornerback Damian Swann: "Having the new staff has given a lot of guys a fresh start. The competition level (in spring drills) is going to be very high because of the new staff."
