It has been a while since the Atlanta Falcons lost -- Dec. 4 to Kansas City on Eric Berry's Pick-2, to be exact -- but they're in danger of losing offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who's a pretty big deal around Flowery Branch. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the San Francisco 49ers are prepared to offer Shanahan their head coaching job , and it's a rare career assistant who'd turn down one of the 32 best jobs in the industry.

Schefter reports that the 49ers want to have Shanahan in for a second interview next week, which will either be the week before the Falcons leave for Houston and Super Bowl LI or the beginning of their offseason. Falcons fans know how this works: A team can't hire an assistant as long as his team is still playing, which is why Dan Quinn wasn't officially announced as head coach in Hall County until after Seattle had lost Super Bowl Whatever-It-Was to New England.

About Shanahan: He's really good and -- as noted -- I was really wrong about him . He'd be much missed. I'm sure the Falcons can find someone who'd be interested in coaching Ryan and Julio and Devonta and Sanu, et alia. I'm not sure they'll find anyone better. Actually, I'm pretty sure they won't.
