Proof that college football really is a year-round sport: Clemson has announced that four Tigers will miss the 2014 opener at Georgia , which won't be played for nearly six months. "They broke a team rule," coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement, which is pretty much what every coach says when issuing such statements.

Two are returning starters, and one of those is named Beasley. But not Vic Beasley, the superb defensive end from Adairsville. David Beasley, a guard from Carver-Columbus, has been suspended for the Georgia game along with defensive end Corey Crawford, also from C-C. (Here we note that Isaiah Crowell, who was briefly a Bulldog, hailed from Carver-Columbus.)

It's probably too soon to be handicapping the game -- actually, given that Clemson lost quarterback Tajh Boyd and receiver Sammy Watkins and will be playing in Athens, Georgia should win, shouldn't it? -- but the four missing Tigers would seem to offset the absence of Georgia safety Josh Harvey-Clemons , who had been suspended for the game before getting booted from the squad altogether. (Harvey-Clemons also missed the 2013 Clemson game due to suspension. But he's not from Carver-Columbus. He's from Lowndes.)

And that's enough of that. I'm guessing we'll spill enough ink and occupy enough Internet bytes discussing this game before Aug. 30. No need to get too excited too soon.
