For the first time since they were moved to a neutral site in 2008, the Georgia high school football championship games are scheduled as a three-day event this year.

The Dec. 10 opening day, a Thursday, will have the two Class A finals preceded by the two championship games of the GHSA’s newest sport, flag football.

Three football finals will be played Dec. 11 and again Dec. 12. All 10 games will be played at Georgia State Stadium.

Flag football, played as a club sport the past two seasons and heavily supported by the Falcons, has about 140 schools signed up for a season that begins in October. Their previous finals were played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

A three-day schedule allows the GHSA to showcase flag football while avoiding morning kickoffs. In 2019 under a two-day format, each Class A final began at 10 a.m.

The investment in three days is made possible by the GHSA’s move to Georgia State Stadium, which offers more affordable rent than Mercedes-Benz Stadium, site of the 2017 and 2018 finals.
