Lakeside, Salem and Our Lady of Mercy have hired football head coaches, filling all known openings in metro Atlanta entering the season that begins in August.
Lakeside, of DeKalb County, chose Norcross freshman coach Richard ‘’Cam’’ Jones to replace Heath Hinton, whose teams were 9-22 in three seasons and made the playoffs in 2015 for the first time in 18 years.
Jones began high school coaching in 2007 and worked at his alma mater Porter Ridge in North Carolina and at Jefferson and Chamberlain high schools in Florida, typically on the offensive side. Jones came to Georgia in 2015 and coached Norcross’s track-and-field teams.
Salem, of Rockdale County, hired former Griffin coach Jarrett Laws to replace John Starr, who became head coach at The Howard School in Chattanooga.
Laws, let go as Griffin’s coach despite a 17-6 record in two seasons, had been hired at Our Lady of Mercy in March but took the Salem job two weeks ago. Laws also has been head coach at Drew (2009-13) and Mount Zion (2007-08) in Clayton County.
Our Lady of Mercy replaced Laws with Jamie Aull, whom Laws had brought on as offensive coordinator.
Aull effectively will succeed Mike Earwood, who retired. Aull was head coach at Mount Zion of Jonesboro (2009-11). His teams were 12-19. Aull was Griffin’s offensive coordinator under Laws in 2014 and 2015.
The only known jobs statewide that have not been filled are Wayne County and Hancock Central.
