A-5A lacrosse playoffs update

On Tuesday, we took a look at the high class. Now we will check in on A-5A. We are down to the final round and championship Saturday will take place at Kennesaw State.

For a preview of championship Saturday, go here.

In A-5A, No. 4 GAC and No. 5 Blessed Trinity will meet on the boys’ side, while on the girls side No. 1 Blessed Trinty will play No. 4 Starr’s Mill.

Before the playoffs began, I made predictions for how the A-5A tournaments would unfold. I correctly picked Blessed Trinity in both the girls' and boys' sides, but missed on their opponents.

Below is a review of my predictions. For the most updated brackets, go here.

  • I had a perfect bracket until GAC came along and wrecked it, knocking out the team I had picked to win it all. The Spartans are now a win away from the first GHSA championship in program history. In their way is as a Blessed Trinity Titans team that also has never won a state title. Not only has neither team won a state title, but this is the first time either has made it to the championship game.
  • In the semifinals, the Spartans knocked off defending-state champion and No. 1 Westminster by a score of 9-6. The Titans edged No. 2 Kell 10-9.

  • The Blessed Trinity Lady Titans are seeking a third consecutive state title and the school has a chance to sweep both the boys and girls tournaments. They're my pick to win it all. But perhaps no team has dominated the tournament the way Starr's Mill is, with wins of 20-1, 16-6 and 15-8 in the semifinals against Westminster. Blessed Trinity has won 17-2, 14-6 and 10-6 over Kell in the semifinals.
  • Starr's Mill has never won a state championship no has it ever been to the title game. They've been to the semifinals twice before, in 2013 and 2016, when they lost to Blessed Trinity 22-11.

Check back on Tuesday for a season recap in what will be the final blog post of the 2017-18 school year.
