Friday night recap: Week 11

ajc.com

A Class AA game between the Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane and No. 7 Brooks County Trojans lived up to its billing as the Trojans edged Fitzgerald 28-27 to win Region 1-AA.

With the win, the Trojans improve to 7-2, 3-0 to clinch their first region title since 2015. The unranked Purple Hurricane — though they’ve played all season like a team that belongs in the rankings — dropped to 7-3, 3-1, with all three losses coming top 10 opponents.

Highlights of the Trojans' thrilling victory can be found at the 7:21 mark of this WTXL highlight reel.

The remaining games played Friday amongst AA teams were blowouts as expected.

Top-ranked Hapeville Charter and Washington square off 3 p.m., Saturday at Lakewood Stadium.

Here’s how the remaining ranked AA teams fared:

  • No. 2 Rockmart beat Gordon Central 62-11 to improve to 9-0, 6-0 in 7-AA. Kevin Myrick of the Calhoun Times has the details.
  • No. 3 Heard County beat Lamar County 40-14 and is now 7-2, 5-0 in 5-AA. A scoring log can be found on Barnesville's The Herald-Gazette.
  • On Thursday, No. 4 Callaway shut out Jordan 56-0 to finish the regular season 8-2, 5-1 in 5-AA. Kevin Eckleberry has the game story for The LaGrange Daily News. The Cavaliers' playoff position will depend on next week's Bremen-Heard County game. If Heard County wins, the Cavs get the No. 2 seed. If Bremen wins, there will be a three-way tie atop 5-AA, with Callaway beating Bremen and Heard County beating Callaway. The tiebreaker is a points system, and if Bremen wins, they are region champions, and Heard County gets the No. 2 seed.
  • No. 5 Bremen beat Spencer 42-6 to improve to 8-1, 4-1 in 5-AA.
  • No. 6 Rabun County beat Oglethorpe County 63-6 and is now 8-1, 6-0. AccessWDUN has a recap.
  • No. 9 Dodge County beat Bleckley County 35-7 to finish its regular season 9-1, 8-1 in 3-AA. The Indians are in line for the No. 2 seed, however, if Washington County beats Dublin next week, there will be a three-way tie atop 3-AA, with Dodge County beating Washington County, but losing to Dublin. The region uses a complex Plus-Minus 15 points system that will be further explained in Tuesday's blog, but to keep it simple for now, Dublin is in good shape to win the region as long as it doesn't lose by more than 14 points. As long as that happens, Dodge County would finish at No. 2 and Washington County at No. 3.
  • No. 10 Washington County beat Northeast-Macon 48-14 to move to 8-1, 4-1 in 3-AA.
  • On bye: No. 8 Dublin
