The Class AA quarterfinals were played on Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and — for most of the state — the games were played in less-than-ideal, cold and rainy conditions. Regardless, those moving on are: unranked Fitzgerald, No. 3 Heard County, No. 2 Rockmart and No. 4 Callaway. All four advanced with double-digit wins.

We’ll discuss the quarterfinals more in-depth — and look ahead to the next two rounds — on Tuesday. In the meantime, here’s a brief recap of Friday’s games.

  • The unranked Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane (10-3; No. 2 seed, Region 1) are back in the semifinals for the third time in four seasons after upsetting the No. 8 Rabun County Wildcats in Tiger by a score of 28-17. AccessWDUN's Jeff Hart has a game story that is accompanied with video highlights.
  • The No. 3 Heard County Braves (11-2; No. 1, Region 5) are in the semifinals for a second straight season after beating No. 6 Dublin 18-3 on the road. WGXA has highlights.
  • The No. 2 Rockmart Yellow Jackets (No. 1, Region 7) moved to 13-0 with a 48-13 road win over Jefferson County. They're in the semifinals for the first time since 1988. David Lee has a game story for The Augusta Chronicle.
  • The No. 4 Callaway Cavaliers (No. 2, Region 5) improved to 11-2 with their 35-20 home win over No. 10 Washington County. They're in the semifinals for the second time in three years, and third time since 2013. Daniel Evans as a game story for The LaGrange Daily News.
