Buford senior Gabby Curry was named Tuesday the Gatorade volleyball player of the year for Georgia for the second year in a row

Curry, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter and libero, led the Wolves to a 41-4 record and the Class AAAAA championship. She recorded 405 digs, 254 kills and 72 service aces. She was the Class AAAAA player of the year and a 2016-17 Under Armour first-team All-American.

Curry, who has signed with Kentucky, is a finalist for the Gatorade national player-of-the-year award to be announced later this month.

The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and character. Curry is member of the National Honor Society and her school’s Beta Club and peer leadership team. Curry has maintained a 4.0 GPA in the classroom.

Curry joins former Georgia Gatorade players of the year Paige McKnight (2014-15, Dunwoody), Haley Templeton (2013-14, Chattahoochee), Teegan Van Gunst (2012-13, Whitewater), Mary Hannah Arrington (2011-12, Pope), Kelly Murphy (2010-11, Walton), Mary Hoey (2009-10, Pope), Monique Mead (2008-09, Landmark Christian) and Betsy Smith (2007-08, Wesleyan).

As a Gatorade Player of the Year, Curry will be able to select a national or local youth sports organization to receive a grant as part of the Gatorade Play It Forward program. Every Gatorade Player of the Year state winner receives a $1,000 grant to donate.
