Basketball: Brown scores 29, but Wheeler loses in New York

Jaylen Brown scored 29 points and had 15 rebounds, but Wheeler lost to Huntington Prep of West Virginia 73-70 in the first round of the Dick’s Sporting Goods High School Nationals in New York.
It marked the end of a high school career for Brown, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution all-classification player of the year who had played the previous night in Chicago in the McDonald’s All-American game.
Huntington was led by a McDonald’s All-American of its own, 6-foot-10 center Thomas Bryant, who scored 27 points and had 19 rebounds.
The tournament features eight teams ranked in the top 10 of USA Today’s national rankings. Six are in the top eight.
Wheeler was granted a special waiver to attend the three-day event that culminates in a final at Madison Square Garden. The GHSA’s bylaws do not allow teams to play after their Georgia season is finished. Wheeler is Georgia’s Class AAAAAA boys champion.
