Dexter Dawson was approved as the head football coach at Americus-Sumter this week. Dawson is an assistant principal at the school who had been an Americus-Sumter assistant coach.

''He already knows our kids, and he has been on the coaching staff before transitioning into administration,'' principal Kimothy Daniel told The Americus Times-Record, which first reported the story.

Dawson replaes Reggie Mitchell, who resigned earlier this month. Americus-Sumter was 4-6 last season. Dawson will be the school’s fourth head coach in four seasons.

Dawson is a former Mitchell-Baker and Georgia Southern standout player. He was head coach at Twiggs County in 2010. His team was 2-8.
