The numbers are modest, but Georgia Tech wide receiver Micheal Summers has played well in the estimation of wide receivers coach Buzz Preston.
“He’s working hard, he’s playing hard,” Preston said. “It’s just that the other two guys have kind of been the guys. Mike’s going to make some plays for us before it’s all said and done.”
Summers has five catches for 34 yards. His last reception was in the Duke game. Last season, as a freshman, he had 10 catches for 211 yards.
DeAndre Smelter is leading the team in catches with 20 for 462 yards. Darren Waller has started the past three games and has 10 catches for 205 yards, including eight receptions in the past three games.
“He’s doing the little things, just like in that play for DeAndre,” Preston said of Summers, referring to Smelter’s 65-yard reception against Virginia, in which Summers enabled Smelter to gain extra yards with a downfield block.
Other comments from Preston: He wants to see Waller play with more consistency, particularly in his blocking. Freshman Ricky Jeune is “making great improvement” to earn limited playing time. He and Antonio Messick practice with the second-team huddle, “and I’m coaching ’em up just as hard as anybody else,” Preston said.
Qua Searcy, who had been a candidate play defensive back this season in his first-year freshman year, is playing wide receiver on the scout team.
