If the Houston Texans select a quarterback with the first overall pick in the NFL draft, or with any pick, for that matter, he’ll have a position coach quite familiar to all Georgia Tech fans – George Godsey.
The Tech sports hall of fame inductee was hired in February by coach Bill O’Brien from his job coaching tight ends with the New England Patriots. The two have a relationship dating back to Tech. O’Brien worked with him in New England in 2011, when O’Brien was offensive coordinator and Godsey was an offensive assistant. O’Brien also coached Godsey at Tech as part of George O’Leary’s staff, serving as offensive coordinator during Godsey’s senior season in 2001.
Godsey was in attendance for the pro days of at least three quarterbacks who could be targets, most likely if the Texans trade out of the top spot – Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville), Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) and Blake Bortles (Central Florida).
Bortles, of course, played for O’Leary at UCF and was a redshirt in 2010, Godsey’s final year at the school.
For Godsey, 35, the responsibility of developing an elite rookie quarterback would be a considerable start to his most prominent job yet. Nearly all mock drafts, though, have former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney going to Houston with the first pick. Houston is expected to take a quarterback at some point, potentially the second round. Other potential targets are Derek Carr (Fresno State), Jimmy Garoppolo (Eastern Illinois) and Zach Mettenberger (LSU).
