Cox has players doing up-downs at the Senior Bowl

MOBILE, Ala. – New Falcons defensive line coach Bryan Cox is certainly pretty intense.

He has the linemen at the Senior Bowl doing up-downs after they make a mistake.

Some NFL personnel men shook their heads as they walked past Minnesota defensive tackle Ra’Shede Hageman doing up-downs after committing an infraction at the North practice on Wednesday.

He's using the up-downs as a punishment drill. The player runs in place and then drop to the ground and spring back up, while keeping the feet chopping. You see this at little league fields and not normally in the NFL.

(If one of the Smyrna Spartans jump offsides they run wind sprints. If they get flagged for not having in their mouth piece, that’s 10 up-downs.)

But, the players that Cox is coaching had kind words about his coaching tactics.

Here’s what they said:

RA’SHEDE HAGERMAN, DT, MINNESOTA: “We didn’t do up-downs at Minnesota. It was more just running. It’s just Cox. He’s the coach and I’m the student. If I do something wrong and he sees it, I have to do up-downs. Obviously, I don’t want to do up-downs. So that just reinforces that lesson he’s trying to teach.”

AARON DONALD, DT, PITTSBURGH: “He’s been great. I love the way he coaches. He doesn’t let you slack at all. If there is anything that he see, he gets on you.”

So, the Falcons defensive linemen better be on point or they'll be doing a lot of up-downs.
