UPDATED: Delta restarts Atlanta-Brussels flights, one year after terrorist attacks

Delta Air Lines is restarting its flights from Atlanta to Brussels, one year after the terrorist attacks in Brussels that included bombing at the airport.

Atlanta-based Delta had stopped flying the Atlanta-Brussels route after the attacks in March 2016. It resumed its New York-Brussels flights in April 2016 and in June began selling tickets for the Atlanta route restarting in March 2017.

"It was particularly heartbreaking last year," said Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed at an event held by the Belgian Consulate in Atlanta celebrating the relaunch of flights. "We will recover together."

The relaunch of the route on Saturday happens to come during the same week as the terrorist attack in London.

Pieter de Crem, Secretary of State for Foreign Trade of Belgium, said at the Atlanta event Thursday evening that "as London will, Brussels showed tremendous resilience and courage.... Here we are today, totally back in business."

Delta chief financial officer Paul Jacobson said demand is holding strong for the route, adding that there is increased demand for travel between Belgium and the United States going into the summer season.
