The long-awaited sequel to “Black Panther” is getting ready to hit theaters, and everyone just got another reason to get excited about the Atlanta-filmed project. Rihanna has announced she’s making her return to the music scene with a song that is said to be a tribute to the life and legacy of Chadwick Boseman. The song was written by Tems, Ludwig Göransson, Rihanna and director Ryan Coogler. The news came about as Rihanna shared a tease of the song, which was simply a melodic hum.
“After speaking with Ryan and hearing his direction for the film and the song, I wanted to write something that portrays a warm embrace from all the people that I’ve lost in my life,” Tems said in a statement. “I tried to imagine what it would feel like if I could sing to them now and express how much I miss them. Rihanna has been an inspiration to me, so hearing her convey this song is a great honor.”
Boseman, who played King T’Challa in the original “Black Panther,” passed away in 2020 of colon cancer at the age of 43. The sequel is set to be centered on Wakanda’s leaders as they deal with the death of their ruler and continue to fight to protect their nation from world powers who are trying to interfere. Angela Bassett, Letitia Wright, Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke are all returning to co-star in the film.

If Rihanna’s song sees the same success as the lead single for the original “Black Panther,” she’s in for some pretty big accomplishments. “All The Stars,” written and performed by Kendrick Lamar and SZA, went on to score an Oscar nomination for original song, in addition to numerous Grammy nominations.
