What you need to know if there’s a tornado

Peak months for tornado activity in Georgia are March, April and May — so, pretty much now.

Gusty wind, large hail and tornadoes are possible later Monday when severe storms sweep through metro Atlanta, according to Channel 2 Action News.

According to State Farm insurance, Georgia had the second highest number of tornado/wind damage claims in 2014 — 10,148 — the lastest statistics available.

Tornadoes can appear without warning, so it's important to be prepared to act quickly.

The Georgia Emergency Management Agency offers tips and information to get ready for tornado season.

First, GEMA states, you need to know the difference between a watch and a warning. A "watch" means a tornado is possible in your area. A "warning" means a tornado has been spotted, and you need to take shelter immediately.
