How much snow has fallen on the East Coast so far? It's actually hard to tell.

One family in West Springfield, Virginia, has been keeping track of snowfall the old-fashioned way ... with a yardstick.

And so it begins.

Two hours: about 1.5 inches

Four hours: about 3.5 inches

Six hours: about 6 inches

Eight hours: 7 inches (and some change?)

It kept snowing overnight obviously, but the family chose to catch some Zzzs.

18 hours: about 15.5 inches and counting
