A tsunami advisory was in effect late Wednesday for Southern California, from San Onofre Beach in San Clemente -- 55 miles north of San Diego -- to a point about 50 miles north of San Luis Obispo.
The tsunami effect, a result of a major quake on the coast of Chile, was expected to start showing up on the coast of California about 4:46 a.m. -- shortly before 8 a.m. (ET).
Major land flooding was not expected, with the height of the tsunami wave expected to be a foot or less. But strong currents and dangerous waves could make the coastal waters hazardous for hours, according to the Tsunami Warning Center.
The advisory prompted the Orange County, Calif., Sheriff to close all beaches, marinas and harbors as a precaution.
