Don’t expect the summer showers that started Monday afternoon in parts of metro Atlanta to bring temperatures down.

It’s going to be hot and humid.

“It’s 97 degrees outside, but with the heat index, it feels like 100,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said about 5:30 p.m.

While the heat index quickly dipped back down, the heat fell just a few degrees shy of the record.

Meteorologist Karen Minton said earlier to make sure to bring jugs of water if you plan to be outdoors for extended periods of time.

Temperatures were 78 degrees in Atlanta, 82 degrees in Griffin and 76 degrees in Blairsville at 10:30 p.m.

Metro Atlanta has seen 45 days of temperatures in the 90s, according to Channel 2. The annual average is 37 days, the television station reported. Temperatures are expected to stay in the 90s through Friday.

Monday hit its expected high of 95 degrees by 4 p.m., then continued climbing.

Along with the heat, areas south of Carrollton picked up bouts of heavy rain Monday afternoon. Jonesboro and parts of Atlanta only saw light showers.

Spotty rain showers are expected Tuesday.

There is a 30 percent chance of rain through Friday, meteorologists said.
