If you’re driving overnight, you’re in for a wet ride with heavy downpours and lightning likely at times.

Shortly before 9 p.m., Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan posted on his Twitter page scattered storms moved into Atlanta.

Metro Atlanta is faced a 40 percent chance of rain Monday that will carry over into Tuesday before rain chances diminised overnight, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Only a 10 percent chance of rain is in effect for Wednesday and Thursday.

In the meantime, scattered showers and storms will help cool temperatures through Tuesday.

While conditions won't be as hot as they were last weekend, temperatures were 80 degrees in Atlanta, 70 degrees in Blairsville and 77 degrees in Griffin just before 10:30 p.m. Monday's expected high is 89 degrees, and Tuesday's forecast high is 88 degrees.

Counties north of Atlanta are under an isolated storm risk that could produce damaging winds, hail, lightning and heavy downpours.

“But the lightning and some pretty heavy downpours are the main threats in the area today,” meteorologist Karen Minton said. “So you want to watch for those during the afternoon.”

Showers will start moving into the far north after 5 p.m., and rain, lightning and strong to damaging winds will pick up by 8 p.m. in metro Atlanta.

Storms could continue to wash through parts of metro Atlanta through 10 p.m., Minton said. But they are not expected to turn severe in metro areas.
