On-again, off-again showers plaguing metro Atlanta traffic at points may return during rush hour Wednesday.

Atlanta has avoided the heaviest downpours for the most part, but south Georgia and east metro areas weren’t as lucky, according to Channel 2 Action News.

“We’ve got lots of tropical moisture coming up, bringing showers over south Georgia,” meteorologist Karen Minton said. “But here, we’ve just got the overcast and some spots where there’s some light rain.”

Downpours however, aren’t out of the question for the day. Showers will start moving upward from the southeast and across I-20 about 5 p.m., Minton said.

Heavier downpours will roll through metro Atlanta through 7 p.m. and continue into the late night.

“But once we get to the midnight hour, it really starts to shut down,” Minton said.

Showers may linger a bit longer across the North Georgia mountains.

There is a 40 percent chance of rain through Saturday.

Temperatures were 87 degrees in Atlanta, 81 degrees in Blairsville and 88 degrees in Griffin just before 5 p.m.

Highs will stay in the 80s through Saturday but trend closer to the upper 80s later in the week.
