SATURDAY’S WEATHER-TRAFFIC: Rain moves out ahead of cool afternoon

Jan 4, 2020

After torrential downpours flooded several metro Atlanta roads and interstates Friday, the sunshine has returned.

The wet weather moved out of North Georgia on Saturday morning, giving the area a chance to finally dry out.

The rain is only stopping because a cold front is making its way through the state, however, dropping temperatures and increasing wind speeds, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.

Atlanta reached 57 degrees about 9:30 a.m., but that’s the warmest it will get today.

The thermometer is expected to drop drastically as the wind picks up, and by Sunday morning, metro Atlanta could see near-freezing temperatures, Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls said.

Over the past 48 hours, most of metro Atlanta amassed an inch or two of rain, which clogged drains, flooded roads, delayed flights and blocked off subdivisions, AJC.com previously reported.

A water main break shut down Chamblee-Dunwoody Road at Peachtree Road in DeKalb County, while other areas dealt with downed trees and overflowing creeks.

The Big Creek Greenway remains closed until further notice, the City of Alpharetta said

The cold front means the North Georgia mountains could see a few snow flurries overnight, but none of it is expected to accumulate.

“We’re not expecting any impacts from that (in the North Georgia mountains),” Nitz said. “In and around metro Atlanta, there will be no snow — just a mostly clear sky with some gusty wind.”

With the rain clouds and cold front gone, Sunday will be able to quickly warm into the low 50s, with metro Atlanta getting another day or two to dry out before rain returns to the forecast.
