It’s rare to describe July in Georgia as comfortable, but this weekend might be an exception.

North Georgia’s lucky streak of low humidity, slightly below average temperatures and dry conditions will continue Saturday and Sunday, Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns said.

“We’re still enjoying the dry weather here, and it’s looking like we’ll have a nice weekend — lots of sunshine and low humidity for the next several days,” he said.

Saturday started off in the upper 60s and should heat up to the to nearly 90 degrees by the afternoon. It should feel cooler than that outside, however.

“When you have such dry air, it works in the opposite of the heat index, where temperatures actually feel several degrees cooler,” he said.

Atlanta shouldn’t see a raindrop this weekend, but the North Georgia mountains could see a pop-up shower or two this afternoon when the heat hits its peak, Channel 2 meteorologist Katie Walls said. Fortunately, those showers should pass through quickly.

On a weekend like this, many Atlantans will surely hit the road to enjoy outdoors. But drivers should allow time for delays caused by road work as Georgia Department of Transportation crews will be out in full-force taking advantage of the dry conditions.

Two right lanes of I-20 West will be blocked at the Downtown Connector from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, GDOT said. Further west on the interstate, a left westbound lane will be blocked at Riverside Parkway.

Peachtree Street will also be blocked at several places between 14th Street and Roswell Road from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., GDOT said. In Sandy Springs, a right lane of Mt. Vernon Road will be blocked in both directions at Ga. 400 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., GDOT said.

Those near the Peachtree Center MARTA station will likely hear lots of noise coming from crews working to repair the damage caused by Tuesday's fire inside the station, MARTA said. The work is expected to last about a week, and it begins Saturday.

Temperatures are expected to slowly increase back to seasonal norms at the beginning of next week, with rain returning to North Georgia on Tuesday and Wednesday, Walls said.
