Sun started to peek between the clouds Tuesday, but overcast skies and showers are expected to make a long-lasting return.

Rain and gusty winds that knocked a tree onto a northwest Atlanta carport and sent another one down and across a Midtown road had moved out of metro Atlanta by Tuesday afternoon.

“It still could be some spots that get some drizzle,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said just after noon. “Much of the activity [is] moving down to the south.”

Northern winds started moving southwest early Tuesday and will continue that trend throughout the day as a cold front moves away from the metro area.

Then, on Wednesday, high pressure building and anchoring itself off the East Coast will pull in easterly winds, and the cloud cover will return, Minton said.

Winds from the east and northeast will bring moisture and, later, precipitation. That moisture is expected to reach metro Atlanta around 11 p.m. Wednesday.

And there’s a 30 percent chance of rain Thursday and Friday, both days expected to be cloudy.

Sunshine should return to metro Atlanta Saturday with a high of 69 degrees, and temperatures will reach the mid-70s Sunday.

Temps were 69 degrees in Atlanta, 61 degrees in Blairsville and 70 degrees in Griffin just after 2 p.m.

They will reach 70 degrees by 4 p.m. and linger there a few hours. Then highs will cool to the 60s through the rest of the week.

The pollen count, which dropped Monday, increased to 173 particles of pollen per cubic meter of air Tuesday. That is well below the current season high of 4,107 and last year's season high of 6,152.
