Expect a wet evening commute and a similarly wet weekend, metro Atlanta.

Showers and storms have already started across North Georgia, according to Channel 2 Action News.

Storms are expected to develop on parts of the east side after 2 p.m., spread to areas north of Atlanta by 5 p.m. and continue across other parts of the metro area through 8 p.m.

“Many of us will be impacted on our afternoon and evening commute by heavy rain as well as frequent lightning,” meteorologist Katie Walls said.

Gusty winds could accompany the storms, which are expected through 11 p.m.

Saturday morning should be mostly dry, but isolated showers and storms could return as early as the afternoon, Walls said.

There is a 60 percent chance of storms both Saturday and Sunday.

Temperatures were 76 degrees in Atlanta, 71 in Blairsville and 74 in Griffin just before 9:30 p.m.

That makes it the 66th time this year temperatures have reached the 90s in Atlanta.

However, a cold front is expected to keep highs in the upper 80s Saturday through Tuesday. And lows could dip into the upper 60s Monday, snapping a record-breaking streak of temperatures in the 70s. As of Thursday, temperatures in Atlanta had not fallen below the 70-degree mark for 58 days. The previous record was 55 days.
