September 11, 2017 Atlanta: Delta Air Lines canceled 900 flights as tropical storm Irma made its way towards Atlanta. Southwest Airlines, the second-largest carrier at Hartsfield-Jackson, canceled all of its Atlanta flights after 1 p.m., amounting to 60 to 70 percent of its Atlanta flights scheduled for Monday. Atlanta-based Delta said the expected north-south winds of 40 mph or greater will run perpendicular to the five parallel runways at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, which can potentially threaten the safety of landings. Planes are best suited to takeoff and land into the wind, according to the airline. The strong crosswinds are expected to exceed the operating limits of some of Deltaâs mainline and regional jets. The 900 Delta cancellations Monday include hundreds of flights at the airlineâs massive hub in Atlanta, as well as continuing cancellations in Florida and the Caribbean. Delta has also canceld some of its flights into Brunswick, Ga. Even more flights could be canceled due to wind shear, lightning and other weather. September 11, 2017 Atlanta: A sleeping Sandy Springs man died Monday after a tree crashed through his home. Rusty Paul, the cityâs mayor, wrote in a Facebook post that âa large tree broke and fell on a house, killing the sole occupant while he lay in bed.â The man was 55 years old and lived in a home on Hardeman Road. Paul said the city isnât releasing details of the manâs death until his family is notified. Itâs unclear when exactly the incident occurred, but around 4:30 p.m. police and fire personnel told Channel 2 Action News that conditions âwere too dangerousâ for them to go inside and recover the manâs body. At 5 p.m., Georgia Power had cut electric to the home and firefighters were trying to slice through the tree to reach the man. âWe are stressing to our residents that if they have trees surrounding their home â even one which could cause harm if it were to fall on the home â find a different room or level of the home to hang out in while waiting out the storm,â city spokeswoman Sharon Kraun wrote in an email. The mayor also said that about 30 trees have fallen today in Sandy Springs as Tropical Storm Irma passes through. Earlier Monday,Â an entrance to Ga. 400 was blocked. According toÂ the Associated Press, this is the second Hurricane Irma related death in Georgia and the 41st overall. âWe have had heavy rains, which have weakened the soil, and high winds,â said Sandy Springs police spokesman Sam Worsham. âItâs a recipe for disaster.â JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM
