Don’t get caught in the storm without a plan.

Agencies throughout the state are prepping for damaging winds, flooding and heavy rain in South Georgia due to Tropical Storm Hermine.

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal even declared a state of emergency Thursday in 56 South Georgia counties.

So the threat is real.

The American Red Cross of Georgia released its tips to keep Georgia residents and travelers safe.

Prepare emergency kits.

They should include a gallon of water per person, non-perishable food and a first aid kit including medications. Also include a flashlight, extra batteries and copies of important documents.

Plan what to do if separated from loved ones.

Choose two places to meet. One may be right outside your home in case of a sudden emergency or outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home.

Choose an out-of-area emergency contact person, and save that contact information in writing and in cellphones.

Print emergency contact cards.

Print one card for each family member and have family members carry them.

Write the contact information for each household member, such as work, school and cellphone numbers.

Download an emergency contact card template here.
