UPDATED [2:27 p.m.] Heavy rain and lightning have moved into metro Atlanta, Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said Tuesday.

ORIGINAL STORY: Metro Atlanta will get another wet rush hour Tuesday.

“We’re looking for those showers and storms to develop as we go through the afternoon, and that’s going to put us in for some heavy downpours, some lightning and possibly even some gusty wind,” Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said. “We won’t be seeing it everywhere, but do be careful as you drive through some of those.”

Jonesboro, Villa Rica, and other isolated areas already picked up light showers just before noon.

But the heavier downpours stayed to the north of metro Atlanta.

Heavy rain and lightning was spotted in Floyd and Bartow counties about 12:30 p.m.

Similar downpours aren’t expected in metro Atlanta until after 2 p.m., but they will last through 5 p.m. before moving south.

Showers may slow traffic, but they won’t cool temperatures much.

Temps were 88 degrees in Atlanta, 81 degrees in Blairsville and 87 degrees in Griffin just before 1:15 p.m.

Atlanta is expected to reach a high of 91 degrees by 3 p.m.

There is a 20 percent chance of rain Wednesday, when highs are expected to reach the low 90s.
