A severe thunderstorm watch in the northwest part of the state could foreshadow wet weather in metro Atlanta, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologists.
The watch covers Floyd, Gordon and Cleburne counties, where downpours and isolated storms are expected until 11 p.m., Channel 2 meteorologist Brad Nitz said.
Severe thunderstorms were reported in northern Gilmer County and in Blue Ridge. Hail was seen in Fannin County.
Rain is expected to continue throughout the evening. There is a 40 percent chance of showers and storms, Channel 2 reported.
“A weakening front will keep the chance of showers and isolated storms going overnight,” Monahan said. “Some of that rain will move into the metro for Tuesday morning’s commute.”
Temperatures were in the high 70s Monday, which is much higher than average this time of year, Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said.
Current temperatures are 77 degrees in Atlanta, 68 in Blairsville and 78 in Griffin.
The wet weather should clear out by Wednesday with temperatures reaching the low to mid 80s.
There will be another chance of strong to severe storms late this week.
