Atlanta weather | Flooding reported on some metro county roads

Long after severe thunderstorms, hail and lightning moved through the metro area Tuesday, reports of flooding continued to surface.

Just before 10 p.m., the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office issued an alert reporting “a massive flood” on Upper Riverdale Road at Garden Walk. No further details were provided, but drivers were urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Earlier in the evening, Channel 2 Action News reported that Forest Parkway was temporarily closed in Clayton County due to flooding. Roads in eastern Atlanta and in Buckhead were also reported to be flooded. A woman narrowly escaped a car before a tree crashed on it along Greenview Avenue in Buckhead, Channel 2 Action News reported.

Thunderstorms and hail began appearing in the metro area around 3 p.m., with Channel 2 chief meteorologist Glenn Burns reporting hail up to one inch in diameter. Severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for parts of Coweta, Fayette, Fulton, DeKalb, Rockdale, Clayton and Henry counties, among others, as a strong storm moved across the southern part of the metro area.

The threat of rain lingered after those warnings expired — delaying the Braves’ game against the San Diego Padres by nearly an hour — but hail and lightning waned.

The chance for rain is 30 percent Wednesday and 40 percent Thursday, but drops to 20 percent Friday as Atlanta “heads into a hot and dry weekend,” according to Channel 2.

Afternoon highs will be in the mid-80s Wednesday and Thursday, upper 80s Friday and around 90 Saturday, with morning lows the rest of the week around 70 degrees.
