Rylander Theater

In 1921, the chic place to be in Americus was this art deco theater in the heart of downtown. Though closed for 40 years, a massive restoration effort brought it back to life in 1999, and the main space was renamed the Jimmy Carter Auditorium, in honor of the former president who grew up 10 miles away. It plays host to a range of professional touring musicals, concerts, community theater shows, school recitals, events and organ concerts that showcase the 1928 Moller organ — one of three Moller theater pipe organs in Georgia.

Folk Pottery Museum of Northeast Georgia

This museum of handcrafted pottery not only showcases the workmanship of the artisans, it also traces the story of pottery and its role in Southern life. Visitors will find items such as bowls, mugs, vases, jugs and more produced in the area from the era of the Cherokees to present day. The museum is part of the Sautee Nacoochee Center, which offers workshops, exhibits and lectures year-round on pottery and other arts. Group tours feature a working artist who demonstrates turning techniques on a pottery wheel.

The Historic Ritz Theatre

This former Victorian opera house has long been one of the Golden Isles’ premier cultural destinations, offering a range of performances by local and regional and well as national and international entertainers. The lineup features drama, musical performances, recitals, films and children’s shows — from a Beatles retrospective to operas staged by the Peach State Opera company. The lobby doubles as an art gallery that offers regular, rotating exhibits. Since 2008, extensive restoration efforts have been ongoing. The most notable renewal was the theater’s signature neon and light-bulb sign.
