If you have ever wanted to explore Mars on your mobile phone — without the pesky dangers of the Red Planet’s 95-percent carbon dioxide atmosphere — a company with employees in Orlando has made that a reality.
ACME AtronOmatic, which developed the popular MyRadar weather application, has also recently teamed up with a video game company Star Citizen to use its data visualizations to explore virtual moons in its highly anticipated upcoming game.
Players can also explore those virtual moons on the MyRadar app.
The company has about 10 employees in a 4,200-square-foot office.
“In bringing virtual worlds into view, players and explorers alike can take a virtual trip to another planet,” ACME CEO Andy Green said in a news release.
ACME, which started operating in Orlando in 2012, partnered with the creators of Star Citizen, a massive-multiplayer game that has players traveling through space on trading missions, to create the virtual planets.
The planets use NASA satellite imagery to create the environments.
MyRadar has been downloaded more than 35 million times, which includes more than 10 million active users.
The weather app recently rolled out a feature that used a smartphone’s location feature to detect automatically when a user was in an airport.
That user would then receive flight information, status and other data through the app.
